One trip, several phones: planning data for your group

How to think about individual eSIMs and shared connectivity.

eSIMXplore editorial · Updated 2026-09-13 · 3 min

The short answer

Start by counting the phones that need independent connectivity. A shared hotspot can be convenient when everyone stays together, but the other devices lose that connection when the host phone leaves, runs out of battery or turns its hotspot off.

Plan around your trip

If different people may take separate transport or return to the hotel at different times, individual plans can simplify the trip. Each phone still needs its own compatibility check. An installation profile should be treated as private and assigned to the device that will use it.

Check the conditions

Before planning to share data, check whether hotspot use is allowed on the exact plan and whether a separate limit applies. Do not assume that a high advertised allowance automatically means unrestricted tethering. Laptop updates, photo libraries and video calls can also change how quickly you use data.

Before you decide

Agree which email address receives the orders and how installation details will reach the right person securely. Avoid posting QR codes in a public group or social profile: they contain installation credentials.

Your next step

For work that depends on a connection, arrange a backup such as accommodation Wi-Fi and download essential documents. Mobile coverage and speeds vary with location and network conditions. A travel plan is not a guarantee of an uninterrupted work connection.
